  • Daily points are given for participation in class discussions, activities, or daily journal entry.
  • Journals are the basis for most assignments and tests and will be graded regularly.
  • Lab performance grades are based on work done during labs.
  • Lab reports are a written summary of one or more labs and are often worth significant points.
  • Textbook searches allow students to use the textbook as a resource to find answers and are sometimes completed in groups.
  • Worksheets usually provide information not provided by the textbook and can be assigned individually or in groups.
  • Quarterly Projects will be assigned each 9 weeks and will be worth 300-500 points.
  • Quizzes and/or tests can be open journal, using lab equipment, or as conclusion of a learning segment.

Most assignments may be made-up, turned in late, or re-done.  However, redone and late work will have an automatic 10% taken off.  It is the responsibility of the student to make sure to collect, complete, and turn in all missing work, including worked missed due to an absence.

Curriculum

Physical Science is the study of matter and energy.  It is an introductory lab based science course.

We will cover the study of physics with how matter and energy are related and how energy is transferred through matter.  You will learn the various forms of energy and how they affect us.  You will also be introduced to chemistry, which is a study of the composition of matter and how it behaves.

The following is an excerpt from The Oklahoma State Department of Education’s Oklahoma Academic Standards document:

Science uses observation and experimentation to explain natural phenomena. Science refers to an organized body of knowledge that includes core ideas from the disciplines of science and common themes that bridge the disciplines. The Oklahoma Academic Standards for Science include standards for kindergarten through grade twelve. The standards are arranged by grade levels at Grades K-8, and by course subject area at the high school level. The Oklahoma Academic Standards include the integration of scientific and engineering practices with core content from Physical Science, Life Science, and Earth/Space Science. This integrated approach will provide students with a coordinated and coherent understanding of the necessary skills and knowledge to be scientifically literate citizens.

The specific standards for Oklahoma High School Physical Science may be found at the following web address starting on page 138:
