I would like to tell you a little about myself. My legal name is Thomas Burney, but all my friends call me "Lucky". This is my first year at Okmulgee Elementary School. I will be teaching Information Technology to 3rd, 4th and 5th graders and helping your student discover "Who they are, What they want, and how to get there." We will be developing life plans and working on our personal Character Traits showing everyone that Okmulgee's Character Counts. I have taught Careers at Okmulgee Middle School for the past two years and prior to that Kindergarten at Okmulgee Primary for six years. I received an AA degree in Business Management with an emphasis in Marketing from Oklahoma State University in 1992. I obtained a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, and Language Arts from Northeastern State University in 1995. I have continued my education at NSU Muskogee and Broken Arrow along with OU Tulsa and St Gregorys University in Shawnee. My Masters Degree will be in Educational Administration from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix Arizona, I expect to obtain this degree by December 20212. In my past I have taught K-fifth spanish, french, physical education, and art. I also have taught homeroom for second grade, third grade and fourth grade. In addition to this I have worked as a CPR instructor for the American Red Cross, been an International Marketer and worked in Home Health Marketing. I live outside of Okmulgee in the country about fifteen miles from Okmulgee yet I still consider Okmulgee my home and do all my shopping and social activities here. I attend Second Baptist Church in Okmulgee. I am very proud to be a part of the Okmulgee community. I also work as a Community Cordinator for PAX a foreighn Exchange Student Program so if you are ever interested in hosting an exchange student please let me know.
I feel the lower grades build the foundation for academic success. That is why I like to make sure the children get the right start, with lessons to reinforce phonemic awareness, listening comprehension, the alphabet, and beginning reading concepts. We continuallly discuss authors (people who write the books) and illustrators (people who draw the pictures) in our classroom.
I will be continuesly observing and assessing your child’s abilities to see what they currently know. I will do formal and informal assessments on Fridays throughout the year.
To keep your child’s information updated on our computer records, please make me aware of any address, phone number changes, etc as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please call me at school 918-756-2020 ext 5126, or on my cell phone at 918-652-1378. You may also "Friend" me on Facebook as T.l. Burney, or follow me on TWEETER.
